One in six school-aged children experiences cyberbullying, finds new WHO/Europe study

1 The World Health Organization (WHO)/Europe released
2 the second volume of the Health Behaviour in School-aged
3 Children (HBSC) study, which focuses on patterns of
4 bullying and peer violence among adolescents. The
5 comprehensive international report draws on data from
6 over 279,000 young people across 44 countries and
7 regions, with its second volume providing important
8 insights into bullying, cyberbullying and physical fighting.
9 Conducted every 4 years, it aims to gain insights into
10 young people's health, well-being, and social environments
11 and to inform policy and practice to improve young
12 people's lives. The most recent survey provides an
13 invaluable resource for understanding the health behaviors
14 and outcomes of adolescents aged 11, 13, and 15.
15 While the overall trends in school bullying have remained
16 stable since 2018, cyberbullying has increased, magnified
17 by the increasing digitalization of young people's
18 interactions, with potentially profound impacts on young
19 lives.
20 Some of the key findings include the following:
21 Bullying others at school. An average of 6% of
22 adolescents engage in bullying others at school. This
23 behaviour is more prevalent among boys (8%) compared to
24 girls (5%).
25 Being bullied at school. Approximately 11% of
26 adolescents have been bullied at school, showing no
27 significant difference between boys and girls.
28 Cyberbullying others. About 12% (1 in 8) of adolescents
29 report cyberbullying others. Boys (14%) are more likely to
30 report cyberbullying than girls (9%). Notably, this reflects
31 an increase from 2018, with boys up from 11% and girls
32 from 7%.
33 Being cyberbullied. 15% of adolescents (around 1 in 6)
34 have experienced cyberbullying, with the rates closely
35 aligned between boys (15%) and girls (16%). This
36 represents an increase from 2018, from 12% to 15% for
37 boys and 13% to 16% for girls.
38 Physical fighting. 1 in 10 adolescents has been involved in
39 physical fights, with a noticeable gender difference: 14% of
40 boys versus 6% of girls.
41 Cyberbullying: a growing concern
42 Cyberbullying introduces unique challenges for
43 adolescents, extending beyond the school gates into the
44 perceived safety of their homes and personal lives. The
45 latest data shows a concerning increase in cyberbullying,
46 with boys cyberbullying others rising from 11% to 14%
47 and girls from 7% to 9%. Similarly, reports of being
48 cyberbullied have escalated from 12% to 15% for boys and
49 from 13% to 16% for girls. With adolescents spending an
50 increasing amount of time online, these figures highlight
51 the urgent need for interventions involving educators,
52 parents, community leaders, and policy-makers to foster
53 digital literacy and safety.
54 In light of these challenges, Dr. Joanna Inchley, HBSC
55 study International Coordinator, emphasized, "The digital
56 world, while offering incredible opportunities for learning

Numbers of cases of the virus typically rise and fall on a four-year cycle — but experts say a number of factors, including El Niño and climate change, have significantly amplified the problem this year. “The record heat in the country and the above-average rainfall since last year, even before the summer, have increased the number of mosquito breeding sites in Brazil, even in regions that had few cases of the disease,” Brazil’s health minister, Nísia Trindade, said. Dengue case numbers have already gone up rapidly in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay in the last few months, during the Southern Hemisphere summer, and the virus will move up through the continents with the seasons. “When we see waves in one country, we will generally see waves in other countries, that’s how interconnected we are,” said Dr. Albert Ko, an expert on dengue in Brazil and a professor of public health at Yale University. The World Health Organization has warned that dengue is rapidly becoming an urgent global health problem, with a record number of cases last year in places, such as France, that have historically never reported the disease. Three-quarters of people who are infected with dengue don’t have any symptoms at all, and among those who do, most cases will resemble only a mild flu. But some dengue infections are serious, producing headaches, vomiting, high fever and the aching joint pain that gives the disease the nickname “breakbone fever.” A bad dengue case can leave a person debilitated for weeks.
